Construction Timeline – Final Update Until Completion

9 May 2011

At this point the city has asked that we discontinue this timeline for safety concerns, as this is a live construction site and members of the Parkersburg Skate Plaza Foundation are not insured if something bizarre happens while we are on site. So, unfortunately, from now on if you want to see what is new you will have to visit the site yourself and from behind the fence.

UPDATE: The city just sent over some more pictures of the park for August 18th.

For all of you out of towners pointing out the awesome kink rail in the background, its not all connected, not that it wouldn’t be possible but the E.L.I.T.E. Sports Center (the owners of the rail) are going to be our neighbors for a long time and we want to keep a good relationship with them, so please don’t skate this rail.

  • evan mcewuen - Monday, July 4th, 2011 - 3:21 am

Why can’t we have bikes at the park there are plenty of people that bmx just like there are people that skateboard & skateboards also are more hard on materials & objects in the park because most of the time whn you do a trick on a skateboard your either going on or off of a rail where if your bmxing yes we use rails but not all the time flatland tricks are also options as well as 180ing and 360s on ramps in the bowl etc I really have no facts that point out a reason to not let bikes into the park therefore I ask you to please allow bikes into the park because as us bmxers we also need a place 2 ride instead of illegally riding behind stores out of empty semis off of loading docks ledges around town etc. Thanks

  • trevor hoosieer - Friday, July 8th, 2011 - 3:17 am

    I agree

  • corey richards. - Friday, July 8th, 2011 - 3:20 am

Evan you are exaclty right and I understand they dont want us in the bowl because of the pool coping, like you said Evan We are riding illegaly behind buildings when we could be at this skatepark riding.

  • Jon Stalnaker - Friday, July 8th, 2011 - 8:55 am

Alan do you know what the parking lot/access road plans are? Nothing ruins a new park like dragging in mud and dirt.

  • Andrew - Friday, July 8th, 2011 - 10:05 am

@evan i believe all types will be allowed in the park that is what i heard and there were quite a bit a BMXers at the design meeting

  • Alan Hughes (author) - Friday, July 8th, 2011 - 11:43 am

@Jon, right now the road is paved just to the ELITE Sports Center and is gravel the rest of the way, but I have been told the city is going to pave it to (maybe past) the plaza once it is finished. As far as parking, it will probably just be gravel at best, they are already stretching funds as far as possible.

@Andrew, bikes aren’t going to be allowed at the park. That was a decision the city made 3 years ago and was said at the design meeting and has been said on this website many times. I personally have no problem with bikes or bikers (accept for pegs) being at the plaza, but right now that is just the way it is and the skate plaza foundation has no control over this decision.

  • aj - Friday, July 8th, 2011 - 7:20 pm

this is not gonna work for me or anyone else so i gota feelin that you gonna have a lot of angry people if theres no bikes allowed

  • Alan Hughes (author) - Friday, July 8th, 2011 - 8:33 pm

Like I said, we have no say in that, we are not even allowed on site any more to continue this photo timeline of the construction.

But if you have plans of requesting bikes be allowed at the plaza, my advice to you from the last five years I’ve spent dealing with people working on this project is that the more you say things like “this is not gonna work for me” the more people will automatically ignore you and you won’t get very far.

  • corey richards. - Saturday, July 9th, 2011 - 12:09 am

I have onee more thing to say why dont just make the rule no pegs are allowed. I mean thats what athens says on there little rule sign thing….

  • jacob merinar - Monday, July 11th, 2011 - 11:13 pm

alan is 100000000000% right becuse he is alan and no one needs to question him or els he will kick me in the face with his awesome legs of 4130 cromo

  • Alan - Tuesday, July 12th, 2011 - 1:26 am

    He’s right, I’m awesome.

  • Hyper - Monday, July 18th, 2011 - 11:09 am

    nastyyy lets geterdone

  • jacob merinar - Tuesday, July 19th, 2011 - 11:10 pm

alan i want a close up of that rail so sneak down an get one

  • jacob merinar - Tuesday, July 19th, 2011 - 11:22 pm

An alan i wonder why is there a bike section on the website?

  • Jon Stalnaker - Wednesday, July 20th, 2011 - 9:28 am

While I completely understand you complying with the city’s request, I would like them to realize that now instead of sitting at my desk and checking in I am now forced down to the location, therefore defeating the point of their original request.

And in other news, THE PARK IS LOOKING AMAZING!

  • Johnathan - Friday, July 22nd, 2011 - 5:25 pm

Bikers. If you wanted to be a part of this project I have one question for you. Where were you when Alan and CO. first started busting his ass to make all of this happen? You’ve had plent of time to get a group of your BMX biker friends together and setup a meeting to inform your city that you would like to be a part of this project.

Since you did not act upon that idea you have two options. 1) Sit and whine. 2) Or get a group together to inform your city that BMX participants need a safe place to practice their sport as well and should be included in the community, not excluded from it.

This park is really starting to take shape and I am so JUICED! to get my butt down there and skate it with all of you guys, especially BIG AL!

  • jacob merinar - Saturday, July 23rd, 2011 - 2:50 pm

by time I heard about there was going to be a park they all ready sasid no bikes. Im not to upset about it becuse I went to all most every event an meeting they had in the past 2 years.

  • Eric Cunningham - Saturday, July 23rd, 2011 - 11:05 pm

Jacob is allowed, no question haha

  • Alan - Sunday, July 24th, 2011 - 3:08 am

Jacob is allowed, but only riding unicycles…

  • jacob merinar - Sunday, July 24th, 2011 - 4:28 pm

Wow Eric an Alan you both mad my day an I trule think im goin to start bladeing.

  • Alan (author) - Wednesday, July 27th, 2011 - 12:04 pm

@Jacob, there is a bike section because we had originally planned on bikes being allowed at the plaza.

  • jacob merinar - Monday, August 1st, 2011 - 12:41 pm

ok thanks alan i all ways wonderd why!

  • Chance - Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011 - 9:52 pm

    Will scooters be allowed

  • Eric Cunningham - Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011 - 12:26 am

Scooters will be allowed to be punched in the wheely bar.

  • Alan Hughes - Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011 - 10:21 am

Yeah, scooter’ers will be allowed, those little things can’t hurt anything.

  • Eric Cunningham - Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011 - 7:30 pm

except when they get in the way and somebody smashes into them.. scooter at your own risk kids..

  • Alan - Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011 - 8:09 pm

Same concern with all little kids no matter what toy they ride.

  • jacob merinar - Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011 - 10:01 pm

hey i like to ride scooters there not only for lil kids

  • Eric Cunningham - Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011 - 10:12 pm

haha this is very true. And GOOD jacob, you can ride something at the park now! :P

  • Chance - Thursday, August 4th, 2011 - 10:42 am

I do tailwhip. etc. I dont want it to be like athens cause little kids get in my way all the time.

  • Chance - Thursday, August 4th, 2011 - 10:52 am

And do just regular people wax the rails?

  • Alan Hughes (author) - Thursday, August 4th, 2011 - 11:17 am

No matter what or where you go little kids are going to get in the way.

Everybody waxes stuff. Inline skaters need more wax to not stick on grinds, skate boarders don’t need quite as much, bikers I have no idea, and I have no idea if people even do grinds on scooters yet.

  • Chance - Thursday, August 4th, 2011 - 12:45 pm

YEAH we do. Look it up on youtube.
Its so easy to grind lol.

  • Chance - Thursday, August 4th, 2011 - 12:46 pm

They even make pegs for scooters

  • Eric Cunningham - Thursday, August 4th, 2011 - 2:41 pm

What do you mean do just regular people wax rails?
by the way, I will be supremely bummed if we get massive amounts of wax on our rails, because especially on metal, you don’t need much of anything to slide. Rails can be waxed a tiny bit, but please don’t screw up the handrails haha

  • Zack Loscar - Thursday, August 4th, 2011 - 3:06 pm

Ahh man, this looks soo sick! I can’t wait to slam and get a mouthful of fresh park!!

  • jacob merinar - Friday, August 5th, 2011 - 2:38 pm

i dont use wax on rails but that may back fire one day

  • matt jenkins - Sunday, August 7th, 2011 - 11:56 am

any idea of an eta for when this beast will be completed and ridable? i just moved form dayton, ohio and i’m itching for some bowl riding. bad.

  • Jon Stalnaker - Tuesday, August 9th, 2011 - 2:01 pm

Rails should NEVER be waxed. Ever. Also, everything is looking pretty gnarly down there, I actually bought a new helmet.

  • Eric Cunningham - Tuesday, August 9th, 2011 - 11:13 pm

Haha what do you know about rails Jon? They don’t put those new-fangled devices in your skate bowls :P
However, I have to agree, please no waxing of our rails.. or really the boxes either, they have metal coping, so there’s really no reason to make everything a slip-n-slide people are gonna get hurt on. If you don’t slide, go faster.

  • matt jenkins - Wednesday, August 10th, 2011 - 8:43 pm

@ Eric Cunningham: go faster and lean more. again: i ask the question if anyone knows when that place will be open. before christmas i hope?

  • Jon Stalnaker - Thursday, August 11th, 2011 - 7:39 am

I know enough to stay away from them!

  • Chance - Saturday, August 13th, 2011 - 6:16 pm

Haha. Check out my youtube. http://www.youtube.com/xThawz

  • Jon Stalnaker - Monday, August 15th, 2011 - 8:29 am

Any truth that someone broke their leg down there skating it and now they have to patrol?

  • brandon - Monday, August 15th, 2011 - 3:49 pm

how close is this monster to being done?????

  • cole - Friday, August 19th, 2011 - 2:34 am

    ahhhhh! the sickness!!!

  • Jacob Merinar - Saturday, August 20th, 2011 - 7:04 am

Can us biker have all the left over dirt to make some ramps so the cry babys will stop crying!?
