State Senator Donna Boley paid a visit to City Hall recently and finally made the $25,000 grant official (read more here). So, we received a phone call shortly after from the mayor’s secretary, who asked on behalf of the mayor if we were even still around and still wanted to work on the park. This struck me as odd. Of course we are still here I thought. But after thinking about it for a minute I realized it is not so obvious. The last meeting we had there were only five of us in attendance, and just a block away from the city building on my way to the meeting I saw a decent size group of skate boarders who never cared to show up, if nothing else just to be accounted for. We have had two presidents resign on us out of hopelessness. There are many more skaters in the area I know personally and I’m sure there are dozens more I don’t know. But nobody shows up and nobody cares because they think it is hopeless, when the truth it is the only reason it would be hopeless would be because nobody cares.
In the summer of 1999 when the Belpre skate park was finally finished, I was amazed. Not by the fact that a couple of us scroungy skater punks were actually able to talk some adults into building a park for us, but by how many skaters were there and skating. I thought I knew almost all the skaters in the area, but there were 20-30 kids and adults there a day that I had never met. It was the greatest time of my life and allot of others felt the same way.
There were so many people there that I never saw at any fund raiser or meeting. I wasn’t bitter about it. I just wondered how much quicker, bigger, and better the park could have been if only they had stood behind us from the beginning, if nothing else just to be accounted for. The mayor and anybody who could actually help make things happen don’t even know if we still exist, because nobody will stand behind us, if nothing else just to be accounted for.
We have meetings the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm in the small conference room of the city building
We are having a car wash fund raiser June 29th at the Vienna Wendy’s from 11:00am – 3:00pm.
Show up, if nothing else just to be accounted for.
